The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the right to contest specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
