People who endured abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed renewed hope after their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

The board president, who leads the anti-abuse organization, stated that the Pope's decision to meet with them so early in his leadership spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The group is pushing for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is proven of abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "resistance in certain regions of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey stated.

Inherited Issue

The new Pope, who took the role in May, has inherited this persistent issue that has haunted the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an unprecedented meeting on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the measure is personal. The Canadian activist revealed they were victimized by a priest who was subsequently transferred between various churches.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to collaborate with him," they stated. "We have the common objective, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Significant Encounter

Seven members of the organization, which includes survivors and supporters from over thirty countries, engaged with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The discussion, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the account of a female survivor victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

Hickey noted the leader was "compassionate" about their personal story and seemed "modest, funny, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they commented. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and receptive and eager to work with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The organization is hoping that revisions to canon law will facilitate the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted experts and gathered documents that they will present to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," they remarked.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recent church-ordered document emphasized the "necessity of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they told the pontiff at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, they expressed optimism for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and establishing a relationship and continuing to build that relationship is a move in the right direction," they commented.

They added that they told with the pontiff: "Even though it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the story concludes - he valued that."
