Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
